The University of Calgary and Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) are pleased to announce the 7th International Conference on Chemical Looping, to be held tentatively at The Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta, Canada September 29th-October 3rd, 2024.

Chemical looping technology offers environmentally friendly and effective methods for combustion with built-in CO2 capture, hydrogen production, gasification, and reforming. This technology is undergoing examination through small-scale laboratory experiments, pilot plant operation, system modeling, and process simulation. Developments from around the globe will be shared at the 7th International Conference on Chemical Looping.

The University of Calgary is a public research university located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada started in 1944.  The University of Calgary is also one of Canada’s top research universities (based on the number of Canada Research Chairs). Chemical looping research activities at The University of Calgary is led by Prof. Nader Mahinpey (IRC & Schulich Chair) through his group “The Energy and Environment Research Group (EERG)” (https://live-ucalgary.ucalgary.ca/research/energy-environment-research-group). The apprenticeship with EERG is focused on promoting the scientific advancement of clean energy and green engineering.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) (https://natural-resources.canada.ca/) develops policies and programs that enhance the contribution of the natural resources sector to the economy, improve the quality of life for all Canadians and conducts innovative science in facilities across Canada to generate ideas and transfer technologies. NRCan also represents Canada at the international level to meet the country’s global commitments related to the sustainable development of natural resources. NRCan's CanmetENERGY-Ottawa laboratory has been active in chemical looping research for over 10 years, engaging in oxygen carrier characterization, reactor design and process modeling and economics. They are currently building a 600 kWth pressurized CLC pilot plant.

Since its beginnings in 2010, the conference has been celebrated six times:

  • 1st International Conference on Chemical Looping. 2010. Institut Français du Petrole. IFP. Lyon. France. Chair: Dr. Thierry Gauthier

  • 2nd International Conference on Chemical Looping. 2012. TUD. Technische Universität Darmstadt. Darmstadt, Germany. Chair: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Epple

  • 3rd International Conference on Chemical Looping. 2014. Chalmers University of Technology. CUT. Goteborg, Sweden. Chairs: Profs. Carl Linderholm and Anders Lyngfelt.

  • 4th International Conference on Chemical Looping. 2016. Southeast University, Nanjing, China. Chair: Prof. Laihong Shen.

  • 5th International Conference on Chemical Looping. 2018. University of Utah. Park City, USA. Chair: Prof. Kevin Whitty.

  • 6th International Conference on Chemical Looping. 2022.  Instituto de Carboquímica (ICB). Zaragoza, Spain. Chair: Prof. Juan Adánez.
